How To Get A DEFINED & Moisturized Twist Out On Natural Hair

As the old saying goes practice makes perfect and the same can be said for mastering twist outs on natural hair. Whether you always end up with a frizzy result or your hair lacks definition, the wrong technique and products will have you shouting SOS. At Miche Beauty, we pride ourselves on great products and great techniques so we’re here to your rescue. We’re going to teach you the beginner-friendly techniques for perfecting twist outs for all curly hair types that will make your style last longer and result in moisturized, defined hair every time.

Step 1: Assemble Your Curl-Defining Products

After shampoo and conditioning, it’s time to start twisting. But first, it’s important to have the right products. For the perfect twist out, we encourage two product combinations – a moisturizing leave-in conditioner and a curl defining cream or twisting cream. If you have high porosity or very dry hair, add your favorite sealant – oil or butter to seal in moisture and keep your curls hydrated throughout the week.

Step 2: Section Your Hair

On wet hair, begin to separate your hair into multiple sections. If you desire a tighter long-lasting pattern, create smaller sections and for a looser pattern, make medium to large sections throughout your hair.

Step 3: Twist and Twirl

Once your hair is sectioned, begin to apply your leave-in conditioner and follow up with twisting cream, detangling and distributing the products thoroughly. Finish with your favorite oil to seal in moisture.

Now it is time to twist! Working in sections, split your hair into two even pieces and begin to twist both strands around each other, wrapping the hair around each strand tightly in a rope-like fashion. You’ll know if you have a good twist if the hair looks even, neat, and is securely in place. This technique will result in long-lasting definition.  Don’t forget to twirl the ends of your twist around your fingers to establish an even pattern.

Step 4: Dry and Unravel Twists

The number one way to avoid a frizzy twist out is to ensure your hair is fully dry before unraveling your twists. To speed up the drying process, you can sit under a hooded dryer for an hour or two. Once your hair is 100% dry, rub oil all over your twists and begin to unravel each twist starting from the ends. You’ll notice when done correctly that your twists will begin to unravel on their own.

Step 5: Separate, Stretch, and Fluff for Elongation

Now that your twists are unraveled, you can begin to separate for more volume and length. Separate your hair gently and fluff with an afro pick until you reach your desired look. Do you desire more length? Then, take your blow dryer and apply medium heat from your roots to the  mid-shaft of your hair to combat shrinkage.

Don’t forget to pineapple and protect your hair at night with a bonnet!

Twist Out Tips For Stretched or Blow-Dried Hair

Another solution to combating shrinkage to your twist outs is styling your twist outs on stretched or blow-dried hair. A twist out on stretched hair requires the same technique as a standard twist-out but fewer products.

When styling on stretched hair, use a mousse or twisting cream only and skip the leave-in conditioner. Layering too many products on dry hair can lead to flakes and product buildup. A hydrating mousse is great for dry twist outs as it defines the hair but also makes your twists dry quicker.

Flat Twist Out Tutorial

Flat twists use a similar technique to cornrows but instead of braiding to your scalp, you are twisting your hair onto your scalp.

To flat-twist, section your hair and begin to apply and distribute your twisting products. Within each section, part your hair into straight rows. From the roots, split your hair into two strands and start twisting your hair over and under onto the scalp while adding on more hair as you twist in a downward motion. Twist both strands until you reach the ends and repeat to the next row.

If you are transitioning or have heat damaged hair, use perm rods or flexi rods on the ends of your twists to create a curl that will blend in with the rest of your hair.

Allow your hair time to dry, then unravel and proceed with styling.
